What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology practice involves delivery of physical exercise and lifestyle modification to facilitate the promotion of physical activity, enhancement of sports performance and musculoskeletal and cardiovascular rehabilitation.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are 4-year university trained allied health professionals accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) specializing in the delivery of exercise and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases.

AEPs are registered with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans Affairs and WorkCover. There are also a number of private health funds that recognise Exercise Physiology services. These services include:

  • Physical assessment (weight, height, waist-to-hip circumference, skinfold measurements, body composition, blood pressure and heart rate)
  • Health-behaviour modification counselling
  • Exercise prescription (gym and/or home program)
  • Exercise testing (aerobic, muscle strength and flexibility)

AEPs assist in management and treatment of a wide range of commonly preventable health conditions including:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes and Pre Diabetes
  • Musculoskeletal Injury
  • Obesity
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Metabolic Syndrome

  • A history of sedentary behaviours

  • Back and Neck pain
  • Physical restrictions and mobility issues
  • Co-morbid conditions
