Meet the Team: Ryan Oxtoby

I knew from the moment I entered high school that I wanted to work in a profession that aligned with my passion for sport and the human body. Being just an ordinary kid growing up in the northern suburbs of Perth, I was like most young boys; full of energy, loved my Aussie rules football and hit my growth spurts early on.

I’ve been kicking footballs around since I was 6 years old and like lots of young kids, I once dreamt of playing AFL. I was lucky enough to make the WAAFL state colts team in 2016 and the WAAFL under 23s team in 2017 where I travelled to the Gold Coast for an exhibition match. The same year I played in the national Uni Games back on the Gold Coast and with some of the best boys I’ve ever met, won ECU’s first and only medal (bronze) in football against some very good teams.

In the same year of 2016, I went straight into University after graduating high school at Ballajura Community College to study Sports Science & Football at ECU. After going part-time with my studies in 2018, I was lucky enough to get an internship with the West Coast Eagles through their partnership with ECU which centred around performance analysis. This was incredibly rewarding as I have supported the Eagles all my life so to work in such a professional and elite environment with some of the highest quality AFL analysts in the country AND for the Eagles to win the premiership that same year was just a dream come true. I continued in this role in 2019 as a leader for new interns coming through the program which really helped me develop my leadership skills. After graduating from my degree in 2019, I continued into a 3rd year interning at West Coast which was unfortunately ended by the Covid pandemic in the 2020 pre-season.

I began working at Nextmove Wellness and Physiotherapy in August 2020 and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Being able to work with our corporate partners to look after the well-being of the Industrial Athlete in the Pilbara whilst utilising World Class Technology has been amazing from a personal and professional perspective. And thus a newfound passion of movement mechanics was born which has allowed me to grow my knowledge and expertise exponentially with the support of the Nextmove team. My journey has been unconventional but has taken me where I never thought I would go, from working in the background to help the team I support win footballs biggest prize to the red dirt of the Pilbara looking after a corporate giant.”
